Wish List

Many of Lana's Fund dogs have nothing. They may have never had a toy, or a bed, or a chew in their lives, those things that give our dogs so much pleasure!  LF tries to provide the following for each dog on an ongoing basis (we support cats, too).

  • Healthy Food
  • Flea Preventative
  • Heartworm Preventative
  • Wormer
  • Mange Treatment
  • Vaccines
  • Leashes/Harnesses
  • Spay/Neuter
There are some things our fund just cannot afford, such as extensive vet care.  There are some things we cannot do, such as give Rabies vaccines.  What we can do, we try to do, for as many dogs as possible.

Spay/Neuter is the most important thing on the list.  Unwanted litters become strays, and we have enough of those in Houston and surrounding areas.  We can ONLY provide this if someone sponsors or we get a grant.  At this time, we do not have either.  To sponsor a LF dog for a needy family, please contact us. We use low cost centers whenever possible.

The food we prefer to use is 3 star or higher... simply because many of these dogs live such a stressful life that they need the best nutrition we can give them.  We do accept ANY dog or cat food donations. We can always find someone who needs it.  We like Victor Dog Food, a 4 star food.  But will take anything from any store. Here are some links to some stores who carry it.

Flea Preventative: we use any, but prefer Pet Armor or Fipromax.  These are the same as leading brands and cost much less.

We like to use HeartGuard Plus for heartworm preventative.  We purchase some from outside the country, but most we get from vet offices in the US. This we mostly need funds for or if you get an extra box or two when you get your pet's refill.

Dewormer is needed by all dogs usually several times in their lifetime, so you can imagine what a dog who eats garbage needs in the way of deworming.  These parasites can cause diarrhea, bleeding, and anemia in dogs if not  controlled.  This makes it difficult for dogs to keep to a healthy weight.  The best dewormers we have used are called PanACur C, and costs about $10-20 per treatment per dog.  Other, cheaper dewormers only kill some of the worms, not all.

Mange Treatments vary, but usually Promeris works very well.  Also, ivermectin in heartworm negative dogs can clear mange in a matter of weeks.  Promeris is by prescription only.  Ivermectin is available from feed stores and online.

Vaccines we purchase from vet supply stores.  The most important are the Distemper/Parvo, and Canine Influenza.  We also give Bordetella, just to keep the dogs respiratory systems healthy.  These are costly and we can use donations or you can purchase a batch for us and have it sent here.

Leashes and Harnesses or Collars allow the owners to keep their rabies tags and ID on their chests at all times.  These are relatively inexpensive, and they can mean the difference between a dog being secure at home, or loose on the street and in danger.

Yard Trolleys are a system of keeping a dog tethered in a yard without being restricted to a small area.  There is a long line that goes between two objects, and the dog's tether attaches to it, allowing the dog up to 100 feet or more of running room.  There are tethering laws in Texas, and most owners who tether dogs do not know them, and keep the dogs on a short chain.  This system allows the dogs much more room to exercise and to get under shelter in the case of weather or extreme heat.
