Ms. Rosa's Fosters: The Ghetto Saint of Fifth Ward Dogs

Ms. Rosa is lady we were introduced to via Rescue Bank. An adult protective services case worker called the RB asking for help for an unemployed and disabled woman to feed her dogs. She was feeding them her food from the food bank. RB asked me to see what she needed, and an awesome friendship was born. We have worked with Ms. Rosa for over a year now. We provide food, medicine, and connect her to other rescues who have spayed/neutered and vaccinated her now 12 dogs for her. Adoptions for her dogs have been slow, and it is a mystery, because all of her dogs are extremely healthy, most are heart worm negative, and they are impeccably clean and groomed. We would love to help Ms. Rosa get her dogs adopted. As much as she loves them, there are too many, and more starving on the streets daily. We are going to focus on getting them listed on Petfinder.org, out to adoption events, and maybe get some of the long-haired dogs to the northern climes, where they would thrive. ADOPTABLE DOGS:

CHUCK

Chuck is a sweet American Bulldog/Lab Mix (note the underbite and smile) of about 1-1+1/2 yrs. He is so sweet and gentle, he loves to cuddle and give hugs. He is not high energy, but not lazy either. Just laid back. Chuck weighs about 45-50 lbs, and is solid, not muscular, build like a lab. He does not jump up or run a lot. He would fit in very well with an adult or older adult household since he is so calm. He is content to sit and let you pet him, or stand and let you pet him. He is ok in his crate, and is up to date on vaccinations. He has a neuter appt in early January. Contact us to meet Mellow Chuck.

BILLY

Billy is a young (max 1 yr) mix of GSD and Boxer or Greyhound. He is tall and slender, but not slender enough to be a full Grey. He is very energetic and friendly. He is up to date on his vaccines and will be neutered soon. He would love to be with a family with children that are a little older (first graders?) since he likes to jump and run. Small children may be afraid. He is not heavy, maybe 45 lbs, but is sleek and muscular. Contact us to meet Billy.

Pebbles, 1-yr female, Lab Mix, Sweet and Calm

Pebbles is a DOLL! She wandered up to a Good Samaritan's home in a notorious ghetto in Houston, TX. The Good Sam fed and loved Pebbles, keeping her in the house and away from the fast, uncaring traffic on the busy street. She is very cuddly, and only ever wants to sit by her person and be petted. She loves to walk on leash, and does play some, but spends most of her time sitting quietly. She would be a great dog for an older couple, or senior citizen, as she never pulls on her leash. She does not demand much, and really just wants to chill. She is about 60lbs, and is ready to meet her new family. Contact us to meet Miss Pebbles.

King- Golden/Aussie Mix/Male

"King" is big brother to Blue in another listing. He is large, about 55-60 lbs. He is stunningly white and has a beautiful long coat. King is a dominant guy with other dogs and would be best in a home where he is allowed to be the boss or as an only dog, with only older children who can handle him. He is not aggressive, just strong. King has been neutered, and is fully vaccinated and heartworm negative. In foster care in Houston, but arrangements can be made to meet him just about anywhere! King would be a great hunting dog or protective dog for single women or men! He loves attention from people.

"Blue": Spaniel/Pointer Mix/Male
"Blue" is a very shy and calm Springer Spaniel Mix. He was rescued as a mangy puppy over 2 years ago, and has been taken very good care of by a woman who rescues dogs in a Houston ghetto! The dogs are flea-free, HW negative, vaccinated, and neutered. Blue has a brother, King, who bullies him a bit, but Blue is sweet and gets along with other dogs well. He is a long coat and its almost completely white! He would love a home with older children (teens) who can play ball with him and take him for walks and to the dog park. He would love to be the only dog, but if other dogs in the home, he would be submissive. This dog is in foster care in Houston, TX. Contact us to meet Blue.

Lucky- Sweet Shep/Catahoula Mix Male

Lucky started his life as "Blackie". He was just a pup when we thought he had come down with Parvo! But luckily, it was not. So his name got changed! He is a very sweet, and docile dog. He is happiest when being walked on a leash. He and his brother Whitey were rescued as babies by a good samaritan from the Fifth Ward in Houston, TX. They were covered in motor oil, and had no hair at all. The good Sam raised them and they are now perfect specimens of male dogness (they are neutered). Lucky is the quiet one, he is about 45 lbs and will probably not get much bigger. He is almost 2 years old. He is a little timid at first, likes to hide between your knees, so needs some one with a little patience to let him gain confidence, and take him outisde for walks and play time. Blackie, Lab Mix, 3 yrs, Male
Blackie is an older male, somewhere between 5-6 years old. About 65lbs. He is a quiet, but happy boy. Loves the outdoors and loves to run and play. He was caught by Ms Rosa because he was roaming the streets, looking for food and love. We are about to get him neutered. He loves other dogs and is very friendly with people. He has a huge bark, so must folks are wary of him, but he is a kitten inside! Blackie will
be fully vetted and neutered before adoption. He gets tired of too much activity sometimes
with Ms Rosa's other dogs, and goes off to his man cave when he has had enough, but otherwise
he is very social.

ZuZu (aka RED2) 60 lbs female Pit Bull
ZuZu is a gorgeous and playful pittie! She was found wandering the streets of one of Houston's worst ghetto's, miserable and hungry. She is now a beautiful dog with gorgeous greenish eyes, and a sweet funny temperament. She gets along great with other dogs, and people, but has not been tested with cats. She is about 55 lbs, so she might accidentally knock a small child over while playing. She does not pull on the leash. She is young, but at least a year or so. No evidence of having had any litters. Red would make a great playmate and protector for a family with school aged kids. A great family dog. Contact us to meet the pretty and fun ZuZu!

Diamond, Female Min Pin Mix, Very playful, active,and friendly.
Diamond is indeed a precious jewel! She is an experienced mother, but has still maintained her girlish figure! She is about 18lbs, and not likely to get any bigger. She is a very happy, and streetwise dog. Unfortunately, she lives in a neighborhood where she was allowed to roam free, and her owners have agreed to surrender her to a new home. She is spayed, up to date on vaccinations, and is a true affection lover! She loves it outdoors, but will stay indoors, too. She gets along with other dogs, but does have a slight food-guarding issue. She would be best with a family who has no other dogs, but she can play at a dog park. She has not been tested with cats. Della, spayed and ready for a home! Sweet and Friendly
Della is named after Della Reese, the popular, but big boned jazz singer of the 1940-50's. This girl is large in all sense of the word; she has a large head, body, and chest. But, she is the sweetest, calmest, most loving dog ever! That is what allowed her to be stolen from her rescuer's yard without making a sound. She was gone for a day and 1/2 then got out of her collar and came home to the foster. She was sitting in the backyard, waiting on breakfast when the foster came out to feed the other dogs! What a gem! She will be loyal, and is very smart. She is very strong, and will need a strong person to help train her. Small children may be knocked down if she gets too playful. she has not been tested with cats. Contact us to meet this gorgeous girl, and take home a loyal friend.

Whitey/ Energetic Bully Mix/Male
Whitey is a 2 yr old male, pit bull mix. He is healthy, HW negative, and a bit of a challenge,
behaviorally speaking. He would be a great dog for someone who has no other dogs and is savvy about
dog training. He will let you hold and pet him, and play with you. The minute he thinks you are going
to grab him or take him to the car, he gets very agitated and starts panting hard, and trying to run and
bucks like a Bronco. Does not like vets office.
We are looking for a behaviorist to help us assess him. He will only go to
someone who has the skills and patience to work with him. He is a sweet boy when he is being good.
