A Few Whirlwind Weeks

Whew, lots going on in Lana's Fund world, folks!

Two of Ms. Rose's long time fosters are headed to NE! Blue and King, sibling Golden mixes, will be leaving March 6, on the next stage of their lives. Ms. Rose rescued these as puppies, and she has had them ever since.  Thanks to a northeast rescue, they will be adopted by appreciative and loving famillies who know how to treat a dog!  And their coat's will be put to good use in the brisk, chilly weather!

Augie, aka Lassie, now named "Little Papa" got adopted last weekend!  He was adopted by the same awesome lady who adopted "Little Mama", hence, the name change! He warmed right up to her and to the new mom, too.  By the time I left, he did not even know I was there!  Unfortunately, though, three days before he was to go home, some jerk tried to break into Ms. Rosa's and left the front door open.  The dogs all got out and Augie was hit by a car.  He has multiple hip fractures, but the kind-hearted adopted took him anyway.  He will be treated while in her care, and he is not in pain at the moment.  A real tough guy!

Star's puppies are halfway ready to go to adoptions, they are about 4.5 weeks now. They are all so cute! Star is done with them now and they are eating supplemental milk and soft food.  They all bark and walk around now. One looks just like his suspected father, Chucky.  More pics coming soon!  By the way, Chucky has completed his treatment for veneral tumors, and is 100% cured.  We will be watching for any recurrence. Next for him is neutering.

A man on Ms. Rosa's Street, has a business that sells used appliances. He has taken dogs in at his business for years, but never vets them or spay/neuter's them.  Consequently, he has generations of dogs and pups there. His practice is to give them away to neighbors. We want to help him.  He has 7 pups that are 7 weeks, and we will vet these and take to adoption events.  He has 5 adults, three are female. We will strive to spay the females ASAP.  This will stop the cycle. Eventually, we will neuter the males also.  Any help that we can get on that front will be AWESOME! It costs about $120 to neuter these dogs at snap.

The news is still sad in the Liberty Rd and Jensen Dr.area of the Fifth Ward. I don't know what other groups are doing, but the strays and hungry, unattended dogs abound in this area.  I have photos of many dogs that have no help, other than if we have a chance to feed them, or vaccinate them while on the street.  They show up, and they disappear. We do our best. Lana's Fund is comprised of three people, myself, Ms. Rosa, and Mr Holley, the street dog feeder.  Donations are scarce, but we bug groups and donors until we scrape enough together to get some help to some dogs.  We will keep trying, because these dogs will always need our help.  If you can contribute, donations are welcome.  You can donate through our parent group, Dogtown Ranch, and specify "for Lana's Fund".   Thanks for your support!

Update: Ms. Rosa to Retire

Ms Rose, the best friend the dogs of the Fifth Ward ever had, is retiring! She has saved dozens of dogs from  terrible fates in the rough streets of  the "Bloody Nickel".  Many have been adopted to wonderful homes.  Ms. Rose is exhausted and it is time for her to get some rest.  I suspect that she will still be feeding dogs in the streets, but she will not be fostering them.  She has truly paid her dues.  We need to find homes or new rescues for 10 dogs, five are pit bulls.  If you can help Ms Rosa retire by taking in one or more dogs into your program, we would be appreciative.

Please contact junerodriguez@aol.com or 2 8 1 4 5 1 6 7 6 2 if you can help. And to thank Ms Rosa for all her hard work saving lives.

Brooklyn Goes to Conneticut!

Brookly, our little Valero puppy, is off to the great white north, to live in splendor!  What a deal for a southern born puppy, born on the streets, survived who knows what kind of life, she had sticks and leaves in her stomach when she went to the vet (which she threw up on my camera).  But I forgave her and this is the first Lana's Fund rescue to get to go up north. We miss her dearly, but we want her to have a great life and so, there she goes... Write to us Brookie...

Update: Chucky, Star's Puppies, and Hungry Jack

Well, we have a lot to catch up on.  Chucky has had his first vincristine injection.  We thought he would show some improvement, even though it has been only a week, but so far, no change.  He gets shot #2 tomorrow Jan 26.  We are hoping for something to change for the better soon.  He does not have trouble urinating or any pain. He plays and jumps around, but it can't be comfortable.  Poor baby.  Paws crossed for Chucky.

Star had 9 puppies and no milk!  She is a first time mom and we wonder if that's why it took her a while to be "ready" to nurse them.  Unfortunately, four did not survive.  The five remaining were rushed to a surrogate mom, who saved their lives by nursing them for 36 hours.  The mom now has enough milk being produced to feed her 5 babies, and one is being supplemented by Ms Rosa (the runt) who is half the size of the other.  They are all male and are about 5 days old now.  It was close.  This is the beautiful surrogate mom with Star's puppies.

Hungry Jack, one of our street treated dogs, now has a home! He is living with a nice couple who love him dearly.  He is exhibiting signs of heartworms though, sluggish, does not always want to eat, and barely moves around.  We are taking him to the vet this weekend, and hope that someone will donate to help pay for the heartworm test and any treatment he gets started on.

Chucky Needs Our Help!

Chucky needs our help:  Poor Chucky has developed veneral tumors on his nether regions.  This is serious because he has bleeding with it and a lot of swelling.  It does not seem to hurt him, though.  The vet bill so far is $65, with 4 shots of vincristine to be coming up at $50 a pop.  Can you spare a few bucks to help us cure chucky?  He is a sweet, sweet boy.  To donate, visit www.lanasfund.blogspot.com
